About Me

I'm an assistant professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Institute for Information Systems and New Media, where I am also a member of the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics and the Sustainable Computing Lab.

My research interests include Security, Privacy, and Policy aspects of the Next Generation Internet (NGI), Distributed and Decentralised Systems, Big Data and Data Science, with a particular focus on policy representation and reasoning (e.g., access constraints, usage policies, regulatory obligations, societal norms, business processes), and the development of transparency and trust techniques.

Academic Projects

CA19134 - Distributed Knowledge Graphs (Cost Action) 2020-2024
The main aim of the Action is therefore to create a research community for deployable Distributed Knowledge Graph technologies that are standards-based, and open, embrace the FAIR principles, allow for access control and privacy protection, and enable the decentralised publishing of high quality data. To this end, the Action connects European researchers and practitioners from: (1) diverse application domains and (2) the whole life cycle of Distributed Knowledge Graphs, from provisioning to finding, accessing, integrating, programming, deploying, enriching, and analytics. The Action will develop practices for scalable, privacy-respecting, high quality and decentralised Knowledge Graph publication and consumption, reach out to the European industry, and formulate a research agenda. https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA19134/

Policy Enabled Next geNeration Internet (PENNI) (FWF Elise Richter Programme & NetIdee Science) 2020-2022
The Policy Enabled Next geNeration Internet (PENNI) project will lay the foundations for a policy, trust and transparency enabled decentralised Next Generation Internet (NGI), that can support intelligent agents that act on behalf of humans. Our hypothesis being that decentralized applications that are able to understand constraints (in the form of goals, preferences, norms and usage restrictions) together with trust and transparency mechanisms will give citizens more control over how their data is utilised and will foster trustworthiness in NGI applications, such as intelligent agents. Starting from this hypothesis, we devise three primary research questions: (i) Can contextual information and policies afford users more control over NGI devices and agents? (ii) Can existing trust and transparency mechanisms be extended in order to support a trustcentric NGI? and (iii) Can existing Internet protocols and query mechanisms be extended to cater for a policy-aware intelligent agents? https://www.netidee.at/penni-richtlinienbasiertes-internet-der-naechsten-generation/

Consent reqUest fRamEwork (CURE) (City of Vienna Projektförderung Digitaler Humanismus) 2019-2020
In the proposed project, we aim to develop a GDPR compliant Consent reqUest fRamEwork (CURE) that elicits greater involvement of data subjects when it comes to granting consent; improves consent request understandability; affords them more control via usage-based generated consent, templates and/or customization features; and provides high transparency with respect to personal data processing. https://www.wu.ac.at/ec/projects/consent-request-framework

Knowledge Graphs at Scale (KnowGraphs) (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019 – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks) 2019-2023
A knowledge graph is a programmatic way of modelling a knowledge domain with the help of subject-matter experts, data interlinking, and machine learning algorithms. Used by several software giants, they are regarded as key enablers for various technologies including question answering, personal assistants and artificial intelligence across all sectors. Their use is currently unattainable for the majority of companies and private users. The EU-funded project KnowGraphs aims to scale knowledge graphs, making them accessible to a wide audience of companies of all sizes. The project also helps end users across their professional and private life by using a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach. https://knowgraphs.eu/

Scalable Policy-awarE Linked Data arChitecture for prIvacy, trAnsparency and compLiance (SPECIAL) (H2020 ICT-18-2016) 2017-2019
The SPECIAL project will address the contradiction between Big Data innovation and privacy-aware data protection by proposing a technical solution that makes both of these goals realistic. We will develop technology that: (i) supports the acquisition of user consent at collection time and the recording of both data and metadata (consent, policies, event data, context) according to legislative and user-specified policies; (ii) caters for privacyaware, secure workflows that include usage/access control, transparency and compliance verification; (iii) demonstrates robustness in terms of performance, scalability and security all of which are necessary to support privacy preserving innovation in Big Data environments; and (iv) provides a dashboard with feedback and control features that make privacy in Big Data comprehensible and manageable for data subjects, controllers, and processors. SPECIAL shall allow citizens and organisations to share more data, while guaranteeing data protection compliance, thus enabling both trust and the creation of valuable new insights from shared data. Our vision will be realised and validated via real world use cases that - in order to be viable - need to overcome current challenges concerning the processing and sharing of data in a privacy preserving manner. In order to realise this vision, we will combine and significantly extend big data architectures to handle Linked Data, harness them with sticky policies as well as scalable queryable encryption, and develop advanced user interaction and control features: SPECIAL will build on top of the Big Data Europe and PrimeLife Projects, exploit their results, and further advance the state of the art of privacy enhancing technologies. https://www.specialprivacy.eu/

Data Licenses Clearance Centre (DALICC) (The Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG ) 2016-2018
The creation of derivative data works, i.e. for purposes like content creation, service delivery or process automation, is often accompanied by legal uncertainty about usage rights and high costs in the clearance of licensing issues. The DALICC project aims to develop a software framework that supports the automated clearance of rights issues in the creation of derivative data works. In essence, DALICC helps to determine which information can be shared with whom to what extent under which conditions, thus lowering the costs of rights clearance and stimulating the data economy. https://www.dalicc.net/

Privacy & Us (MSCA-ITN-2015-ETN – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks) 2015-2019
With the rapid accumulation and processing of personal data by numerous organizations, it is of paramount importance to protect people from adverse uses of their data, while allowing them to enjoy the benefits the use of these data can possibly provide. This is the question of protecting citizens’ privacy, while enabling them to make informed decisions regarding their actions with privacy implications. The Privacy & Us innovative training network will train thirteen creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early stage researchers (ESRs) to be able to reason, design and develop novel solutions to questions related to the protection of citizens’ privacy, considering the multidisciplinary and intersectoral aspects of the issue. ESRs will be trained to face both current and future challenges in the area of privacy and usability. Privacy & Us offers a combination of research-related and transferable competence skills that will enhance the career perspectives of the ESRs in both the academic and non-academic sectors. https://privacyus.eu/

Propel (The Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG ) 2015-2016
PROPEL will survey technological challenges, entrepreneurial opportunities, and open research questions on the use of Linked Data in a business context. Shifting away from a predominantly academic perspective and an exclusive focus on open data, we conceive Linked Data as an emerging key disruptive technology for enterprise data management. The project will lay the foundations for successful Enterprise Linked Data product and service development by gauging industry requirements and innovation potential. http://www.linked-data.at/

Graphsense (The Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG ) 2015-2017
GraphSense provides algorithmic solutions for real-time analytics of digital currency transactions for gaining insight into cash flows and functionality of digital currency systems. A special focus lies on anomaly detection, which should identify transactions and transaction patterns that deviate from typical structures. This could, for instance, help in identifying and tracing fraudulent activities. GraphSense will be applicable for fiat as well as emerging virtual currencies such as Bitcoin. http://www.graphsense.info/

Seramis (FP7) 2015-2017
The growing interest in RFID technology in recent years has sparked an intensive debate on the benefits to be expected. With the growth of RFID implementations in size and scope comes a shift away from infrastructural aspects to the question of how to draw value from the large amounts of collected data. However, the necessary procedures for the handling of massive RFID data sets are still an under-researched issue. Against this background, the objective of the SERAMIS project is to push the boundaries of current RFID implementations, thus turning them into powerful tools for intelligent information management. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 612052. http://seramis-project.eu/

Líon 1 & Líon 2 (Science Foundation Ireland) 2007-2013
Líon 2 was SFI funded Centre for Science, Engineering & Technology (CSET). It set out an ambitious programme of consolidation, growth, collaboration and sustainability over five years, building on the results and achievements of the previous CSET grant (Líon-1).
